Amethyst Point Black Tourmaline and is Mohs 7 andQuartz at its most architecturalsix faces converging to a single point. Amethyst is quartz (SiO) colored violet to purple by iron impurities and natural irradiation within the host rock. The point form preserves the crystals natural growth habit: a hexagonal prism with a pyramidal terminus, a shape that reflects the trigonal symmetry of the quartz system. Color intensity varies from pale lilac to deep grape, deepening where growth was slowest. Mohs 7.
